This Fall I became a little obsessed with the Milky Way. Although it's visable year round, the Galatic Core is only visable April through October. The appeal of the GC to photographers is that the colorful center isn't visable to the naked eye, but only reveals itself in a timed exposure; the one case where the camera surpasses the eye.
